Our journey as brand new parents continues. We feel like waking up from a nightmare and except from running from the baby house to the orphanage every day, back and forward and enjoy our children, we did not get chance to do too many other things so far.
Sergey was very busy with his new musical telephone! We were trying to teach him the ABC, but with not too much success today. I don’t think he learnt the letters and the numbers yet and as we are asking him to repeat some words, I think he may have some pronunciation problems. However, I am sure in few months his English is going to be much better than mine. He copies the square and the triangle pretty well, but he refused to draw a person!. That`s OK, we`ll keep trying. I think I may be little bit obsessed and trying to test everything from the first days. It is pretty hard to communicate with him. He talks a lot, but he doesn`t seem to be very upset when we do not understand what he is saying, he just repeats it again and again until somebody understands or we will give up or our translator rescues us. I wish we learnt more Russian! He is very sweet otherwise, he calls us Papa and Mama already and today he asked, Igor – the translator: “if is he going to be in the car with his parents when he is going home?”. I think he pretty much understands what is going on, maybe one of the educators told him and he also saw other children in his class, going home with their parents.
Alina was dressed today in a blue pajama with “Here comes the trouble!” written on it. This was funny! We are already scarred! We witnessed her first step with no support. She pulled herself up from the sitting position, she waited few moments to make sure we can see her and appreciate her effort, the she fell and started laughing. She imitates everything what she sees. She says da-da and ta-ta but no ma-ma!!!! Too bad, I am the one who is trying to improve her vocabulary, while her father is enjoying teaching her to make funny faces, stick out the tongue and giving back kisses. She does everything back! She very much enjoys seeing her face the mirror, today she started laughing and give kisses to the mirror. It was so cute! She has such a beautiful laugh. She also discovered the massage today, Aveeno cream for her face eczema made miracles! Thank you, Allyson! That`s my girl!
We are waiting to find out when will they be together. We found out that the quarantine for chicken pox will be over only in March 24, which is way too late. The director of the orphanage offered today to move him in a shelter, just to be in the city for us not to have too much to travel, but we did not think it was a good idea. If he is not going to be with his sister, we think there is no point to move him again in a different place, with different children and caregivers. We may also leave after few weeks and we don’t want to confuse him more. Let`s see, unfortunately there are not too many choices!
For the waiting parents: try not to pack too much! We paid 150$ for extra 45 kg of baggage from Almaty to Astana. There is a limit of 20 kilograms/person for internal flights. Not to forget home: a flash light (we had no power yesterday evening for several hours), toys, books and DVDs. Also, very important, please keep in mind, when you rent the apartment, you can bargain!!!!
Tomorrow we will meet with Kristen and her beautiful daughter – Maya, I only saw sneak pictures of her, but tomorrow our girls will play together!

So, So cute! Very happy for you and your new family! Our little boy loved his musical phone too! We still have it....I love it because it sings and says hello in Russian! Good Luck in getting everyone a little closer together!
Sounds like you're having fun with the kids. Sorry that the siblings can't be united right now, but I'm glad they'll be together forever more once you bring them home.:)
Hello! I have been thinking of you all day today. :)
I'm sure your son will learn english just fine. You are right-you don't need to teach him all the first day. :)
I remember when Sarah and Andy adopted Zach and Addie-they said that Zach caught on very quickly and at first they couldn't communicate very well. Don't you worry-you will be fine!
I love the pictures. I hope they can be reunited soon-that is hard!!
But, now that you will be their parents, you can be togehter forever very soon.
your days must be very busy with both kids at 2 differnet places.
So good to hear from you.
:)
thanks for the packing tip. I keep hearing that over, and over, and over. :)
So very adorable. I love reading your updates. You will be simply amazed at all the changes that will occur now that you are there giving your beautiful children tender loving care!
Oh yay! You have Igor as a translator. He is so fun!
The pictures of the kids are great. I love Alina's smile. It is so infectious. They're both adorable.
We are so so so happy for you. How exciting and what a roller coaster you are on. This is very challenging for you but what a blessing for both you and the children. What a wonderful adventure!
Catalina, I teach American Sign Language to parents and their hearing children through a program called Sign2Me. When you come home, I would be happy to meet with you and teach you some signs that will help facilitate communication with your little ones. My kids are both signers and, almost 6 years after beginning, we continue to be a signing family! Even for Gabriel Sergey to learn things like some foods he likes or playtime activities will help reduce frustration. We'll talk more when you get home! Thinking of you EVERYDAY!!!

It will be awesome when the 4 of you can be together. I look forward to seeing photos of that.
But I think that being with you now on individual visits is good for them at the start. Each get your undivided attention while you're getting to know each other. Hope that made sense :) It's early and I'm tired!

They are both adorable and so much fun! Although it probably feels like you are exhausted running around, it is probably a good thing that you're able to spend some quality time one-on-one with each of them. Have you tried sign language with Gabriel Sergey? It may help to bridge the language / pronounciation transition (especially if you can learn the Russian words and repeat both the Russian and English words) and reduce some frustration. Judging from others' experiences - the kids seem to develop real fast once they have the focused attention. And it sounds like both of yours are well on their way!
My oh my they are cute! It looks like Gabriel has the most amazing blue eyes! Seeing Yulia's sweet smile while standing in that beam of sunlight just warms my heart.
Take advantage of being able to give them individual attention for now! It probably won't happen very often once you are all together. I know it's hard traveling so much, but maybe you can use the car time to brush up on more Russian.
Can't wait to see and hear more. ;-)
Hi,
I just found your blog.
Congratulations on finding your unexpected family!
The one thing I learned from our experience in Kaz is you have to go with an open mind and open heart just as you have done.
I have two boys ages 6 and 9. Not all boys enjoy drawing. When my older son was four he hated drawing!! Hated it. To get him to draw a person or anything actually was torture. He was a little more cooperative for his preschool teachers. He still does not care to draw and his writing is terrible!! At age 9 he still draws stick people when he draws, however he's incredibly smart, gifted program and all!!
My second son however has always enjoyed drawing and coloring etc.
Just something to think about. Being a boy, you may have to spend time doing something more active and then getting him to try to draw if he doesn't seem to really want to do it. Or if you draw this then we can do something he enjoys for motivation(through his translator of course).
Congratulations again. The children are beautiful!!
What cute pictures! Sounds like you guys are busy. Sorry that you are unable to spend time with both of the kids all together. Igor wasn't our translator, but was working with another family we were with at the same time, he was great!
